From Deposition 1 to 50k: What it's like with a father as a business owner.

Growing up, I lived a normal life, playing sports and hanging out with friends at school. I would sometimes spend time with my dad while he’d be at work, and I’d help where I could. At the time, I honestly never thought much about it. However, as the years passed by, and my dad’s business grew, I came to realize how much of my life has been influenced by Fortz Legal, as it has been in my life for as long as I can remember.

It all started when I was around five years old, and we were living in the dynamic city of Las Vegas. My dad, Shaun Fitzpatrick, decided that he wanted to try his shot at running a litigation support company. In the next few weeks my dad started a business named Fortz Legal, where it was just him, his sales background, and a can-do attitude. Being his oldest, I quickly became one of my dad’s very first "employees”. I would help organize files and pack up supplies. One of my earliest memories helping my dad was pulling an Italian ice cooler and delivering it to his clients, which I thought was fun. I remember nights when I sat at the kitchen table, listening to my dad talk to my mom about the business that he was building. About four months in, my parents decided to pack up, move, and bring Fortz Legal to Michigan. From then on, Fortz grew from a single employee to over 30 employees today. Even with the growth of the company over the years, my dad would make time to coach my baseball and basketball and make time for my sisters and I when he could.

Growing Up Fortz Legal

It’s fun to look back at old photos and see how much of my life has been influenced by the presence of Fortz. I attended Christmas parties and witnessed the office space filling up with more people each year. I attended golf outings with my dad for many years, meeting new people with every game. Now, as I am preparing to enter my junior year of high school with my sights set on studying business in college, it makes me realize how much Fortz is woven into who I am. This summer, I have been promoted from helper to true employee, where I am getting my own laptop, email address, and a real role on the team. I will be diving into the sales and client service side of the company alongside team members like Collin, our COO. I’ve also been given the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of our process service division. All preparing me for my future college endeavors ahead.

Seeing my dad’s dedication to his clients has taught me work ethic, reliability, and leadership. Most importantly, I see how much time he took out of his day, outside of working hours, to brainstorm ideas for growing the business. It became day-to-day in our household, and I was able to witness the backstage prep of the jobs that needed to be covered. Using the knowledge that I gathered from years of observation, I plan to make my mark here at Fortz and grow with my dad by my side.

Sincerely,

Miles Fitzpatrick
